The KEO report is a sub-regional examination and synthesis of the environmental situation in the greater Carpathian region, that includes parts of seven countries (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, the Slovak Republic and Ukraine).

The KEO satellite, expected to launch in 2001, would fly high above the Earth with messages from as many humans as possible, possibly well into the billions, according to KEO project managers in Paris.
To name their satellite project, supporters researched the most frequent phonemes in major world languages and came up with "K," "E" and "O." A phoneme is the smallest phonetic unit in a language that is capable of conveying a distinction in meaning.
Philippe chose to send KEO into space rather than bury it on Earth because, "I felt that space appeals more to the human imagination," he wrote on the KEO Web site.

As a contribution to the global network of OceanSITES time series reference sites, in June 2004, a surface buoy was deployed in the Kuroshio Extension recirculation gyre, at 144.5°E, 32.3°N. The buoy carries a suite of sensors to monitor heat, moisture and momentum fluxes, and upper ocean temperature and salinity.
In June 2005, air and sea surface pCO2 sensors were added to the KEO buoy to monitor the carbon dioxide uptake by the ocean.
The KEO time series reference site is sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Climate Observations (OCO).
