Keopuolani was strict in the observance of the tabu, but mild in her treatment of those who had broken it, and they often fled to her for protection.
Keopuolani, the highest ranking chiefess in the islands, was the most sacred wife of King Kamehameha the Great, and mother of Liholiho and Kauikeaouli (Kamehameha II and III).

Keopuolani is a key historical figure however you look at her.
To outsiders, she is one of the chiefesses who broke the kapu against free eating (sharing of food by men and women at the same place, which was not allowed except during funeral rites for chiefs) after the death of Kamehameha.

Kamehameha III chose to celebrate his birthday on March 17, in honor of his admiration for St. Patrick of Ireland.
The son of Kamehameha I and Keopuolani, the sacred wife, Kauikeaouli was hanai to Chief Kaikio`ewa and raised in `O`oma, Kekaha in the North Kona district.
When the missionaries arrived in 1820, he was among the first to be educated in Christianity and the English language.

Kamehameha then began to transform the west coast village of Lahaina - up to that point the playground of Maui's alli (high chiefs) - into a political center of his united Hawaiian kingdom.
Though he himself spent little time here, his "favorite" wife, Queen Kaahumanu, and his "sacred" wife, Queen Keopuolani, made Lahaina their base, and his sons and successors, Kamehameha II and Kamehameha III, carried on much of the government here.
It was during the 1840s that the latter transferred the government to Honolulu.

Keoupuolani Sand Dunes are situated in the center of Keopuolani Regional Park, Kahului, Maui.
Part of the "sand hills of Wailuku", these dunes are one of the best remnants of a large lithified (consolidated) sand dune system that used to stretch from Waihee to Waikapu.
Along with being a last of its kind geological feature, these dunes harbor rare native Hawaiian plants, are in an area hisorically known for a diverse native insect fauna, and may hold fossil evidence of extinct Hawaiian birds.

More and more, instead of my morning walk through the neighborhood, I take a five minute drive to Keopuolani Park to walk briskly there for an hour after the 6:30 mass.
There is nothing quite as refreshing as the smell of freshly cut grass and the view of the green and blue sea across the road.
