Kepone, also known as chlordecone, is a carcinogenic insecticide related to mirex, used between 1966 and 1975 in the USA for ant and roach baits.
It was produced by Allied Signal Company in Hopewell, Virginia and produced nationwide pollution controversy due to improper handling and dumping of the substance into the James River.
Kepone (band) was also an American indie rock band based out of Richmond, Virginia.

This official reported that "Kepone was everywhere in the plant," and that workers wore no protective equipment and were "virtually swimming in the stuff." In December 1975, the James River in Virginia, United States, was closed to the harvest of all seafood due to trace elements of Kepone in several species.
Oyster harvest was prohibited for ten months even though no sample of the oysters contained concentrations of Kepone in excess of EPA guidelines.
Many news stories emphasized the possibility of seafood contamination and a study was conducted to determine how news stories influenced the demand for oysters from other areas which were completely isolated from James River oysters (Swartz and Strand 1981).

Tests showed that Kepone had accumulated also in the blood of workers' wives, children, and even their pets, as well as in the many people living near the plant in a low-income housing project and a home for the elderly.
Traces of Kepone were found everywhere, from Hopewell's dust to the mud settled in the James all the way to its conjunction with the Chesapeake Bay.
Kepone residues in the plant and the surrounding soils were trucked out under vigilant control and eventually buried in a salt mine in West Germany.
