The first general body meeting of Kerala Kalamandalam was held at Maduradas Kalidas memorial hall at Daressalaam on 3rd February 1957 and a managing committee consisting of 11 members was elected.
In the subsequent years Kerala Kalamandalam progressed with a pattern of cultural programs, Malayalam dramas, variety entertainment programs consisting of music, dances, tableaux, one-act plays etc. Children’s sports day, Mandalam day (presently celebrated as the Half-yearly General Body Meeting) and fancy dress competitions were some of the other important annual activities.

THRISSUR: A few candidates have alleged irregularities in the appointments to the posts of Lower Division Typist (on May 22) and Instructors Grade II in Kathakali Sangeetham and Sahityam (on June 5) in Kerala Kalamandalam and are dissatisfied with the way in which the candidates had been assessed, interviews conducted and ranklists prepared.
The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) had staged a demonstration on May 5 in protest against the conduct of interviews for selecting the LD Typist in violation of the code of conduct for the Assembly elections.
To complete the formalities and initiate measures to upgrade Kalamandalam, the UGC had mooted an ad hoc arrangement with Cultural Affairs Secretary as Acting Vice-Chancellor and Kalamandalam Special Officer as Acting Registrar prior to the constitution of the deemed university's Board of Management, according to sources in the UGC.
