Kerang is a smallish town of some 4400 people situated on the Loddon River at the northern tip of the state (25 km from the state border).
Kerang Historical Museum is located in the former Franklin homestead in Atkinson Park, next to the caravan park in Riverwood Drive.
The fine memorial clock at the corner of Wellington and Victoria Sts was established in honour of schoolteacher Karlie McDonald who died in 1927 while trying to save one of her students from drowning in the Loddon River.

The area around Kerang is dotted with lagoons and lakes and is believed to have the most populous ibis rookeries in the world with an estimated 200,000 ibis using the area for breeding each year, along with many other waterbirds.
Kerang was declared a shire in 1871; at the time the settlement's population was 109.
The arrival of the railway from Bendigo in 1884 and the construction of a tramway to Koondrook in 1888 led to expansion; by 1891 the population had increased to over a thousand.

The region was settled and irrigated by Irish emigrant and innkeeper, Woodford Patchett, who also built the first bridge over the local reach of the Loddon River, presumably to make it easier for locals from across the river to frequent his pub.
Patchett's contribution to the development of Kerang and the district is honoured in the local museum, which also displayed some interesting old farm machinery.

Kerang is strategically positioned on the higheay network between Swan Hill, Echuca and Bendigo inthe productive north west irrigation area of Victoria.
In 1857 Woodford Patchell envisaged purchasing land in the town to commence a business but after a disagreement moved almost 5km downstream and established a farm on land he purchased from the owner of Gannawarra Station.
Claimed to be the first practical irrigator in Victoria, Patchell grew experimental crops of barley, millet, oats, maize and also cotton, beet, tobacco and suger cane.
