I have in the past used a material called Scankerb (because it comes from, you guessed it, Scandinavia, Sweden to be precise) which is a nicely profiled piece of concrete giving a normal profile on the 'car' side and a lower profile (more friendly to pedals) on the cycle side.
Also, anything non standard will be frowned upon by the maintenance engineer who will want to be sure the kerb unit stays put and will still be available in 10 years time, which you can be reasonably sure about with BS standard kerbs.
