Kereopa te Rau (?-1872) was a Māori Warrior; nicknamed the eye ball eater.
Kereopa was probably baptised by Father Euloge Regnier during the 1840s and may have served as a policeman in Auckland during the 1850s.
Kereopa and his Pai Marire followers then abandoned the people of Opotiki to the revenge of the Pākehā and retreated to the Urewera Mountains to preach their faith to the Tuhoe people.

Te Ua spoke in favour of showing compassion to the castaways and, in the end, the passengers and crew were hosted by Māori and delivered safely to New Plymouth.
Te Ua was also told that he was chosen by God as his prophet and commanded him to cast off the yoke of the Pakeha.

The Battle of Te Ranga, June 21, 1864, was the last major conflict of the Tauranga Campaign and is also said to mark the effective end of the fighting involved with the Invasion of the Waikato.
