Founded by the Carthaginians around the sixth century BC, Kerkouane was devastated in 310 BC by Agathocles, the Tyrant of Syracuse, and although the town's defences were rebuilt and strengthened they were unable to prevent it being ravaged by a Roman expedition led by the general Atilius Regulus.
It is precisely this prolonged abandon that makes Kerkouane so important, since the surviving remains have lain untouched since that fateful day and now offer modern-day generations an incomparable picture of a small third-century BC Carthaginian town.
Although Kerkouane was rebuilt after Agathocles' incursion, its plan predates the reconstruction and the well preserved foundations indicate that Punic urbanism had reached a sophisticated level.
