MANHATTAN, Kan. — Insects called kermes scale may be showing up on some oak trees and while the condition isn’t life threatening, it’s not pretty on the eyes either, said a horticulturist with Kansas State University.
Kermes scale is a soft scale that feeds only on oak trees.
The kermes scale that normally attacks bur oak produces eggs that hatch in late June but those found on pin oaks hatch in September.
