Jazz News: Kermit Driscoll Gravely Ill with Lyme Disease
Driscoll first emerged as a close compatriot of the guitarist Bill Frisell during an influential stretch from the mid-1980s through the mid-'90s.
Driscoll concurrently tangled with an honor roll of downtown composer-improvisers like the alto saxophonist John Zorn and the trumpeter Dave Douglas, with whom he worked in a collective called New and Used.
Driscoll had stayed somewhat active during his illness -- he appeared on several noteworthy 2005 releases, including albums by the guitarist Ben Monder and the drummer John Hollenbeck -- but he found it increasingly hard to work.

Kermit Driscoll at All About Jazz
Kermit James Driscoll was born on March 4th of 1956 in Kearney Nebraska, beginning his musical life playing piano at age 5.
In May of 1978 Kermit went to Belgium to play with Stephan Houben who at the time was working with Bill Frisell.
Bill Frisell formed his group in 1986 along with Joey Baron and Hank Roberts and for the next 10 years that was the centerpiece of his musical life.

LIVE documents the work of the Bill Frisell Trio at the peak of their expressive powers, recorded in concert before an ecstatic audience in Sevilla, Spain...where they know from guitarists.
From the opening strains of "Throughout," Frisell`s method is clear: over the waltzing, minimalistic backbeat of Driscoll and Baron, the guitarist unwinds spare sheets of reverberant chords and tape loops.
A rollicking theme like "Pip, Squeak" is equal parts western swing and free jazz, and the trio`s ability to juggle multiple moods and tempos transforms "Hello Nellie" from a moody ballad, to syncopated free-for-all, to barnyard boogie.

And, some live album’s such as 1995’s Gramavision (Rykodisc) Live by guitarist Bill Frisell, bassist Kermit Driscoll, and drummer Joey Baron are a kind of ending.
Driscoll and Baron do more than keep up, and their abilities to shape and mold the soundscape allows Frisell’s guitar to float above and reach new heights of emotion and color.
Within the live environment, the trio’s “songs” are less focused on definitive beginnings and endings, and more on the exploration within the moment.

Pop and Jazz in Review - New York Times
While Kermit Driscoll replaced a broken bass string in Monday's early set by New and Used, the quintet's violinist, Mark Feldman, described the next piece, "Trifecta." It's about compulsive gambling, he said, and is "programmatic in nature even though it's low on content." At first, the character is winning a little more than he's losing.
Most of the set was drawn from the group's current album, "Souvenir" (Knitting Factory Works).
Driscoll, a ticking four-note pattern wandered around the quintet, while sustained melodies, crashing drums and bent funk bass lines drifted in and out of earshot.

It's been covered numerous times, by wildly different artists, but my favorite version is this live instrumental arrangement by guitarist Bill Frisell, bassist Kermit Driscoll, and Joey Baron, one of my very favorite drummers.
Though Frisell, Driscoll, and Baron are quite capable of radical song-reconstruction, madcap rhythmic shifts, and rollercoaster twists of form, here they wisely allow their arrangement of "Have a Little Faith in Me" to unfold gently, within a fairly accessible structure.
The often-angular and surprising Baron even breaks into a straight-out pop backbeat for a few measures.

True to his influences, which include rock music and more conventional so-called classical music sounds, Hollenbeck’s treatment of a large ensemble’s energy and force is far different than standard big band writing and instrumentation.
The rhythm section has his CQ pal Matt Moran playing mallets (sic) and Kermit Driscoll on what sounds like electric as well as acoustic bass.
As this variation gradually supersedes the original theme of carefully harmonized voices, tougher vamps from Hollenbeck and Driscoll build up to a climax of rock band-like vamps and downward cascading textures from the piano.

Frisell's third album and last for ECM, Lookout For Hope, marked the recording debut of The Bill Frisell Band featuring Hank Roberts, Kermit Driscoll and Joey Baron.
Produced by Lee Townsend, the album's diverse material - ranging from country swing to reggae, quasi-heavy metal and backbeat rock with a twist to Monk's "Hackensack" - nevertheless possessed the cohesive and unmistakable personality of a working band on to a sound of its own.
The formation of the Quartet, with Ron Miles (trumpet), Eyvind Kang (violin) and Curtis Fowlkes (trombone), was a new working band for Frisell, who had worked with the telepathic rhythm combination of Kermit Driscoll and Joey Baron for nearly ten years.

Rossi brings it all to the table in what’s certain to be a treat for the avante-garde/free form fanatic, and what could be a headache for the traditional listener.
