The Kern County earthquake was the largest earthquake to strike Southern California since the Fort Tejon earthquake of 1857 and the Lone Pine earthquake of 1872, and it caused immense and widespread damage.
Kern County is also the home of the first inland spaceport in the United States, the Mojave Spaceport.
In the county the population is spread out with 31.90% under the age of 18, 10.20% from 18 to 24, 29.80% from 25 to 44, 18.70% from 45 to 64, and 9.40% who are 65 years of age or older.

Kern County is a county located in the southern Central Valley of California and extending east beyond the Southern Slope of the Eastern Sierra Nevada range, including parts of the Western Indian Wells Valley, and Northern Antelope Valley, north of Los Angeles County.
As well as oil and natural gas it is also noted for its mineral wealth, including gold and Kernite, which was discovered in 1926.
The county derives its name from the Kern River which was named for Edward Kern, topographer of General John C. Fremont's 1845 expedition.

The largest earthquake in southern California since the Fort Tejon earthquake of 1857 and the Owens Valley earthquake of 1872, the Kern County earthquake of 1952 caused immense and widespread damage.
The Kern County earthquake claimed 12 lives, was responsible for at least 18 injuries, and caused at least $50 million in property damage.
This quake and its aftershocks (at least 20 were of magnitude 5.0 or greater) were responsible for damaging hundreds of buildings in the Kern County area, at least 100 of which had to be torn down.

Looking at the Temblor Range on the western slopes and the interesting sedimentary rock sculptures of the uplifted ocean floor with its Mojave Desert vegetation seems strangely familiar yet out of place.
In eastern Kern County two desert ecosystems intersect; the southernmost border of the interior Great Basin Desert and the northwestern Mojave Desert.
The gray soils were under the waters of lakes, the red was caused by the dry periods when iron ores were exposed to air and the dark cap is the remains of a basalt lava flow.
