Kernel panic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A kernel panic is a message displayed by an operating system upon detecting an internal system error from which it cannot recover; the term is largely specific to Unix and Unix-like systems, as well as the Unix successor Plan 9.
The kernel routines that handle panics (in ATandT-derived Unix source code, a routine known as panic()) are generally designed to dump debugging information to either the screen or a specified file and then freeze the computer.
The kernel panic was introduced in an early version of Unix, and demonstrated a major difference between the design philosophies of Unix and its predecessor Multics.

 Kernel Panic
Kernel Panic brings together digital arts and architecture in a physical and entropic mode: enveloping net art, digital ephemera, computer structures and sculptural installation, the exhibition presents participatory performance, social image making systems and group collaborations together in a pluralistic experience.
Kernel Panic is a term coming from computer architecture deign and functionality: an irrecoverable hardware collapse yielding on-screen coded messages.
Kernel Panic - the exhibition - seeks to attain a Tron-like immersion into that condition, a metaphor for a contemporary digital-urban environment where the body in space negotiates multiple ephemeral stimuli.

How to Troubleshoot Linux Kernel Panics   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Kernel panics on Linux are hard to identify and troubleshoot.
Troubleshooting kernel panics often requires reproducing a situation that occurs rarely and collecting data that is difficult to gather.
The most common cause of a hard kernel panic is when a driver crashes within an interrupt handler, usually because it tried to access a null pointer within the interrupt handler.

A New Screen of Death for Mac OS X
One might opine that the look-and-feel of a kernel panic is hardly important—what matters is the usefulness of the information provided to the user when a panic occurs.
Even in the case of the default graphical panic configuration, a panic's raw details are not (normally) lost: if possible, the kernel will save panic data to nonvolatile memory, from where it will be picked up and logged to a file upon reboot.
Figure 8 shows a program that will cause the panic image (be it the built-in image or the custom image, if one is loaded) to be displayed, complete with the characteristic dimming of the screen that occurs in the case of an actual kernel panic.

 Resolving Kernel Panics
If a third-party kernel extension or one of its dependencies is incompatible or obsolete with respect to the version of Mac OS X you are using, kernel panics may occur when the kernel executes such extensions.
Likewise, if a kernel extension or one of its dependencies is corrupted, such as the result of hard disk corruption, kernel panics are likely to occur when the kernel attempts to load or execute such.
Similar to kernel extensions, drivers for third-party hardware which are incompatible with the version of Mac OS X you are using, or which have become corrupted, will cause in kernel panics.

Kernel panic - Knoppix Documentation Wiki
In Linux, a panic is an unrecoverable system error detected by the kernel as opposed to similar errors detected by user space code.
It is possible for kernel code to indicate such a condition by calling the panic function located in the header file sys/systm.h.
However, most panics are the result of unhandled processor exceptions in kernel code, such as references to invalid memory addresses.

If you experience a kernel panic with a specific software, be sure to inform the developer what version of their software you are using and with which operating system it happened.
Otherwise in attempting to locate the kernel extension (which is what a kext file is), the update may kernel panic upon installation or right after the installation.
In some cases the kernel panic will alert you "There is no driver for this platform", and Apple has made a knowledgebase article about this issue in Article 106403.

 Linux Resources at KrnlPanic.com
The kernel is the core of your operating system (OS), whether your OS is Linux, Unix or windows.
The kernel takes care of all process management (what program runs and when), memory management (which parts of memory get used for what) and also, the kernel takes care of interfacing the OS with your computer's hardware (disk drives, sound card, modem, network card, etc).
All of these previously listed errors are because of something that happened to the kernel that it couldn't handle, whether it was an access to an invalid memory location or the inability to find the initialization files it requires.

 The Construction of Panpipes
As a program, panpipes has two primary goals: it triggers a kernel panic, and it attempts to hide its working through a set of "cloaking" measures.
Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the system flaw used by panpipes to trigger a kernel panic is the flaw's age.
Consider the relevant example of the process subsystem in Mac OS X. The runnable entity in the Mac OS X kernel is a Mach thread, which is further separated into a shuttle and an activation.

Making the most of a kernel panic
The odds are you will not get an exact match since the symbols in the kernel symbol table are for the entry points of functions and the instruction pointer address will be somewhere inside a function, not at the start.
I see people constantly show panic messages like this but rarely do I see someone take the time to match up the instruction pointer with a function in the kernel symbol table.
Using the unstripped kernel image with all the debug symbols should show the exact line of kernel source code where the panic occured.
