For a number of weeks the Kerr Stuart was used on this duty and appears to have performed well.

 The Kerr Stuart WREN Class
Instructions to the Stoke-on-Trent works from Kerr Stuart‘s London office on 1 February 1905 regarding No. 888 were that ‘we wish to make this with the awning and weather board a standard type of engine to be called "Wren".
Mention of ‘Delagoa Bay‘ in the records suggests that Kerr Stuart handled the shipment but, although all other overseas despatches are accounted for in their Shipping Specification ledgers, 4006 and 4013-4015 are conspicuous by their absence.
Kerr Stuart still had one "Wren" (no. 4331) on their hands when they closed down in July 1930.

 Kerr Stuart 4388
In 1949 and 1950 two new small Fowler diesel mechanical locomotives arrived and the Kerr Stuart locomotive was sold on to the Brookfield Foundry and Engineering Company Ltd. This foundry was appropriately located in the former Kerr Stuart works where number 4388 had been built 24 years earlier, Kerr Stuarts having gone bankrupt in 1930.
Number 4388 was stored in the company of a Bagnall pannier tank in the former Kerr Stuart erecting shop, and eventually when the foundry went into liquidation in late 1982 and an auction was organised at the site.
The comparison with Kerr Stuart's narrow gauge designs can be seen by comparing with 2'3" gauge inside framed "Tattoo" class 0-6-2ST running on the Talyllyn Railway "Edward Thomas" or the 1'11.5" gauge outside framed version preserved at the West Lancashire Railway "Stanhope".

It has been purchased by a consortium of eight enthusiasts, including three members of the Moseley Tramway, whose intention is to restore the locomotive to original operating condition as soon as manpower and funds permit.
Nevertheless, supplies were limited, and thus assistance was sought from British manufacturers, resulting in an order with Kerr Stuart to the same specification as the Decauvilles.
The extent of the similarity appears to indicate that Kerr Stuarts were provided with working drawings by the French Government, or at least detailed specifications.

Kerr Stuart locomotives went to most parts of the World, and it is not surprising that at least twenty-four found their way to South Africa.
Kerr Stuart 764, a "Waterloo" class 0−4−2 side tank, was painted in "standard" colours and shipped to Durban for the all−in price of £1,038; construction costs were estimated at £776.
Kerr Stuart appear to have lost money on these contracts but this was not an uncommon experience at this time.

In 1893 Hartley, Arnoux and Fanning were taken over by James Kerr and Co., the firm becoming known as Kerr Stuart and Co. Ltd.
This machine was among the last, as in 1930 Kerr Stuart and Co. Ltd failed.

Albert L. Kerr was born on Sept. 9, 1916, in Lawrence, Mass., the son of Albert L. Kerr Sr.
Kerr was educated at Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass., received his bachelor’s degree from Yale College and his master’s from Harvard Graduate School of Education, where he met Rae Morgan, who would become his wife.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Rae Kerr; a daughter, Jean Kerr and her husband, Neal Fisher, of Kittery Point; a son, Stuart Kerr and his wife, Eleanor, of Washington, D.C., and one granddaughter, Marian Kerr.

Despite being allowed to graduate, Kerr could not attend a university right away, but attended a junior college for a year before going to the University of Missouri.
She says she was not a good student at college either because she "daydreamed and read and partied." She also wrote constantly and sent many stories to publishers, which were all rejected, and worked briefly as an assistant at E.P. Dutton.
M.E. Kerr is well known for her ability to appeal to both boys and girls because of her captivating characters and the thought provoking issues in her novels.

This tiny locomotive was built by Kerr, Stuart and Co. Ltd., California Works, Stoke-on-Trent, England in 1919, works no. 4031 and is of the Wren Class.
These were the smallest type of standard locomotive built by Kerr Stuart, yet the most popular.
The Hackworth valve gear was cheaper to produce, yet gave good service and was eventually fitted to most of Kerr Stuart's smaller locomotives types.

After much listening to many tracks, Stuart took us on a tour of the other demo rooms, showing off the DVD player and 5.1 audio.
These we knew about from Alan James, but I felt the picture quality was superb, apart from being anamorphous which was down to the Cinemascope print.
The visit almost ends here, but I would like to thank the staff at James Kerr who are perhaps reading this to thank them for their patience and understanding from such a bunch of pernickety fusspots like ourselves.

Kerr Stuart 4183 was brought for Kempthorne Prosser and Co, and after retirement 4183 was acquired by the Museum of Transport and Technology (MoTaT) in Auckland.
It is now on lease to McDonalds Restaurant in Paraparamu, Wellington, where it is on display under a canopy with an Aa class carriage, which serves as an eating area.
The photo shows Kerr Stuart 4183 under the canopy at McDonalds Paraparaumu, and behind it can be seen the carriage.

We have been trying to have her return to Stuart Hall for one of our Alumnae Week-ends and I have been told that she is coming this year.
As I discovered during a recent visit with her, M.E. Kerr (by all of her names) is as delightful in person as she is on the pages of her books.
M.E. Kerr is not only beautiful but she is what my Southern Grandmother would have called "gracious" in her dealings with people.

According to Lowe the firm originated in 1881 as factors (Rolt) in Glasgow as James Kerr and Co. (James Kerr appears to have been a gifted man who died young).
Some standard gauge designs were manufactured, notably 4-4-4Ts for the Metropolitan Railway, fifty 4F 0-6-0s for the LMS and 25 57XX 0-6-0PTs for the GWR.
Rolt is an important commentator on Kerr Stuart as the firm folded whilst he was serving a premium apprenticeship thereat.

It thus became the first standard-gauge diesel loco sold by Hunslet; but the works number was prefixed 'K' to denote its Kerr Stuart origin.

Kerr Stuart 0-4-0T "Diana" at Gilfach Ddu in June 1972.
Built for stock by Kerr Stuart (works number 1158) as one of a batch of six "Sirdar" class locos in 1909 it did not find a buyer until 1917 when it went to the Kerry Tramway in Montgomeryshire.
When the line closed in 1925 the loco was acquired by the Oakley slate quarry at Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Maxitrak's take on a Kerr Stuart "Tattoo" class 0-4-2, a small industrial design of the early twentieth century.
It makes a large, easy to drive engine in 5 inch gauge, rather like a small 7 1/4 really, with a free-steaming locomotive type boiler.
It needs a seat fitted to the top and a water container connected up to the existing plumbing to feed the locomotive injector, but is substantially ready to go.
