However, that doesn't seem to be the case with former Kansas guitarist and songwriter Kerry Livgren.
While Livgren attempts to and often does capture the Kansas sound (much of which he helped create in the first place), the result is nowhere near as creative.
Livgren would be better off returning to Kansas if that is the sound he truly wants to explore.

Livgren went on to become an integral member of the famous version of Kansas for more than a decade, writing songs such as "Dust in the Wind" and "Carry On Wayward Son" that became true classics.
To his surprise, Livgren was able to physically salvage the old quarter-inch, reel-to-reel tapes and re-master them for CD release as is -- with no remixing or additional recording or overdubbing.
Even more amazingly, although Livgren has kept busy as a solo recording artist and songwriter since his departure from Kansas in 1983, some of the other members hadn't played or even owned an instrument in 30 years.

As a member of Kansas, Livgren shared songwriting duties with Walsh and as the group progressed, it became evident that Livgren's contributed much of what made their music so unique — specifically its complexity and lyrics that spoke of a restless search for truth.
As a result, the latter two AD albums were released only in the Christian market, and that combined with tours consisting primarily of small clubs and churches, the public had virtually no exposure to D's music.

Kerry and Dave's (and John's and Michael's and Warren's) faith in Christ really encouraged me. I recall reading Kerry's Seeds of Change in one sitting - which never happens with me (I'm a slow read.) Probably the most impressive thing to me about Kerry is what Christ has done in his heart.
Kerry doesn't compose songs like this all that often, because his favorite classical composers are from the late romantic & early 20th-century periods, and they went wild with chromaticism (although some of them, such as Ralph Vaughan Williams, did some arrangements of modal folk tunes).

Then it's the turn of "White Light," one of the two new tunes that Kerry has written for this record, a melodic hymn that could be an astonishing staple (please Kerry do it!) of the next Kansas concerts.

At the time of Livgren's project, Ronnie James Dio was singing for Black Sabbath, a band which is generally considered as Satanic band amongst various religious groups.
This has been rumored as one of the reasons why Livgren wanted Dio to sing two tracks on the album - Livgren supposedly wanted someone earthly to sing on his album to prove the power of the God.
