Kerry Prendergast was elected as Mayor of Wellington in 2001, a role she did not initially see herself undertaking.
Kerry has worked as a volunteer grief councillor for those who have experienced a birth tragedy, something she too has faced when her second child died at birth.
Kerry is a trustee of Skylight (the Children’s Grief Centre Trust), Joe Aspell Trust, Katherine Mansfield Birthplace Society, New Zealand International Festival of Arts, and also, is and has been, a patron of many Wellington organisations.

Wellington City Council has been left scrounging for $816,325 to complete its quay beautification project, but Mayor Kerry Prendergast insists there is "not a budget blowout".
Ms Prendergast spoke only to make the point that the initial $3.2 million budget, cut in March, had been adequate for the project.
