Cubs GM Ed Lynch announced on Tuesday that Kerry Wood, their promising young hurler faces Tommy John surgery to replace the ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing arm.
But in the minors, where winning a championship is second to player development, it is generally uncharacteristic for a pitcher to throw more than 150 innings a season unless he is not considered a real major league prospect.
Kerry is one of the humbler, nicer guys to come to baseball in a while.

Kerry Wood: Pitched the Best Game in Baseball History, and at the earliest age   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Kerry Wood, a rookie baseball player only 20 years old, who started the season in the minor leagues, in just his fifth major league start, but with a 100-mile-per-hour-hour fastball, pitched what one commentator called “arguably the best pitched baseball game in history”.
Kerry Wood struck out 20 batters in just 9 innings, a National League record and a remarkable fact when one considers that there are only 27 outs per side in a baseball game, plus it rarely happens that a single pitcher pitches an entire game nowadays.
So many baseball records are flukes, caused not by the players playing well but by accidents, coincidences or by the opponents playing badly.

Game Score - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Game Score is a metric devised by Bill James to determine the strength of a pitcher in any particular baseball game.
The highest game score for a nine inning game in the history of baseball was Kerry Wood's one-hit, no walk, 20 strikeout shutout performance for the Chicago Cubs against the Houston Astros on May 6, 1998.
For example, if a pitcher's line is 6IP, 4H, 4R, 2ER, 1BB and lK, that comes to a game score of 59, but would not be an official quality start because of the total runs allowed.
