Kesen (気仙郡; -gun) is a district located in Iwate, Japan.
Kesen consists of 4 towns/cities (in order of population size): Ofunato, Rikuzentakata, Sumita and Sanriku (although recently (2003) Sanriku officially became a part of Ofunato).
As of 2003, the district has an estimated population of 6,936 and a density of 20.71 persons per km².

Iwate Prefecture (岩手県; Iwate-ken) is located in the Tohoku region on Honshu island, Japan.
It was not until the end of the eighth century that the Nara authorities had penetrated deeply into Iwate, with Fort Shiwa, to the north of present day Morioka, constructed in 803.

On October 1, 2005 the village of Miyamori from Kamihei District and the former city of Tono merged to form the new city of Tono.
On January 1, 2006 the towns of Ishidoriya and Ohasama (from Hienuki District) and the town of Towa (from Waga District) merged with the city of Hanamaki to become the new city of Hanamaki.

On the evening of 27 April 1971 four stones were witnessed to fall near the village of Kabo, Gwarzo district, Kano State, Nigeria.
This meteorite fell on 13 June 1850 in Kesen, Iwate-ken, Honshu, Japan, so it is an old and well known witnessed fall.
Kesen is an H4 chondrite, with shock veins.

 Science Fair Projects - Karakuwa, Miyagi
Karakuwa's name (唐桑) literally means "China (Tang Dynasty, specifically) Mulberry," and has been used to refer to the area back to the times when it was part of a larger Kesen District in Mutsu Province.
According to the story of where the name came from, a Chinese ship wrecked on the rocky coast, and in its hold was a mulberry tree.
During the Meiji Restoration, it was taken from the Date clan as punishment for their involvment and given to the Takasaki Clan to administer, becoming part of Motoyoshi District in 1868, then becoming part of several short-lived prefectures before finally becoming part of Miyagi Prefecture on April 18, 1876.

It is the southern entrance to Rikuchu-kaigan National Park, which stretches down from the Pacific coast of Iwate to the north.
The present building was constructed in five years by Date Masamune, who reigned over this district in 1604, and is designated as a national treasure.
The Rikuchu-kaigan Coast in the east of Iwate is a shoreline with a variety of scenic beauty along the Pacific Ocean between Kuji and Kesen'numa in Miyagi, and is a part of the Rikuchu Kaigan National Park.

Alan Owston, who had been traveling in the interior of the main island of Japan, told me that he had seen what he thought to be a stone meteorite in a temple of Iwate.
We are expecting to soon receive some other pieces, which may give new facts; and also a fuller examination of the mineral constituents -- metallic and non-metallic -- will be made ere long.
Professor Ward formally christened the meteorite the ''Kesen Meteorite," and gave a short description of the peculiar features of meteorites, particularly the plasmagraphs or mould marks, illustrated by the specimen before the Academy.
