Kesennuma is situated in a temperate climate zone and has a moderate climate.
However, Kesennuma is known to be fairly warm for a city located at its latitude, largely because of ocean currents that flow close by.
Kesennuma relies on tourism and commercial fishing, the latter being what the city is known for, especially its tuna, pacific saury and skipjack tuna production, keeping the fishing port very active.

Part of the East Japan Railway Company (JR East) system, it runs as a spur line from Ichinoseki Station in Ichinoseki, Iwate in central Japan to Sakari Station in Ōfunato, Iwate on the coast.
It connects with the Kesennuma Line at Kesennuma Station in Kesennuma and the privately owned Sanriku Railway's Minami-Riasu Line at Sakari Station in Ōfunato.
In all cases, Kesennuma was a stop on a run, but run endpoints varied.

For most train riders in Miyagi, the preferred route should be the Kesennuma Line.
The last usable train on this route arrives in Kesennuma at 6:52 pm, which is cutting it a bit close, the one before that gets in at 17:26, but doesn't go on to Shishiori-Karakuwa.
The two major highways into Kesennuma parallel the train routes, so you can either take get on the Route 45 or Route 284 through southern Iwate.

Probably the fastest way to get to Kesennuma is to get on the Tohoku express way, head north and get off at Ichinoseki.
First get to route 398 in Hassama and then follow the signs to Kesennuma (on Route 346 — which is a lovely drive and even goes through a little bit of Iwate!).
When you arrive at Minami Kesennuma station walk straight out of the station and just follow the road (straight the whole way).

In Kesennuma, a base for deep-sea tuna fishing since the 1970s, the northern Miyagi cooperative had until last year boasted of the largest number of fishing boats among such cooperatives in Japan.
The situation is severe not only for Kesennuma but also for other Japanese deep-sea tuna fishing bases, such as those in Kagoshima, Shizuoka and Kochi prefectures.

I was greeted there by the ever-famous Massa (thanks to the O'Leary family for the cheesehead and to his students for the fabulous sign), the assistant principal (Kyoto-sensei) and then was swept away to Omose.
That was a big Friday for me. It was a definite rush to be back in Kesennuma, my home away from home.
We were met there by Mikame-sensei (President of the Environmental Education Center of Miyagi University in Sendai) and some other community wetland specialists, along with a group of Miyagi University Environmental Education students.
