Ketch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A ketch is a sailing craft with two masts: A main mast, and a mizzen mast abaft the main mast.
The ketch rig is often confused with a yawl.
The difference is that the ketch has her mizzen mast forward of the rudder post thus having more sail area, which contributes significant forward propulsion, whereas the mizzen on a yawl is aft of the rudder post and is used primarily to balance the sail plan (and as a riding sail while at anchor).

 WHY A CAT KETCH
There are two masts, one set close to the bow which is the mainsail and a mizzen which is usually near or just aft of the center of the boat.
The second way to reef - which may the most desirable on the larger models, and an option for the smaller models for those who may not be comfortable with the mast exchange, is to have normal reef points in the sail and add halyards.
Now in most boats you'd be in a nice pickle…but with the cat ketch, just let the main (foresail) go and the center of effort will go so far aft that she will spin around and tack - then you can re-sheet your forward sail and sail off.

It's also been my experience that the mizzen on the ketch is a very valuable sail at anchor (to stabilize rolling and orient the bow to the wind), and also to get out of tight squeezes under sail (you can back it easy, etc...).
I think the most important aspect when designing the ketch rig is to make sure that there will be enough room between the mainsail and the mizzen to maximize the efficiency of the mizzen.
We will also be considering at least 3 variations of rigging this single-masted ketch utilizing a single masttube configuration, and at least two bi-pod alternative configurations as well.
