However, Kettering lost an internal power struggle with GM and Standard Oil Co. directors of the Ethyl Corp. Kettering's strategy was discarded when oil supplies proved to be plentiful and TEL turned out to be profitable in the mid-1920s.
Kettering and the bureau were so worried about the press that all official correspondence used the trade name Ethyl rather than the word "lead" to avoid leaks to the newspapers, "as this term is apt to prejudice somewhat against its use," according to the superintendent of the Pittsburgh field station.
Kettering's level of interest in iron carbonyl indicates that he was ready, after the deaths in Dayton, Deepwater and then Bayway, to abandon lead and move forward with iron.

Kettering Union workhouse, built in 1837-8 to designs by George Gilbert Scott who was the architect of many other workhouse buildings including ones for the nearby Northampton and Oundle Unions.
The homes were intended to provide accommodation for around 30 boys and girls in rural surroundings away from the influence of the main workhouse.

He said the Kettering Fire Department then arrived, stabilized the building and began to work from the outside to the center of the building to where they thought the explosion originated.
