The Conservative majority was reduced to 13 in a Borough Council by-election held in Wicksteed Ward on 6th October 2005, where Labour candidate Lynsey Tod (a relative of former Labour Borough Council leader Richard Tod) replaced resigning Conservative councillor Derek Darby.
Kettering Borough Council was established in 1973, as part of Conservative reforms of local government, by the merger of the pre-existing Urban District Councils of Burton Latimer, Desborough, Rothwell and Kettering with the majority of the Rural District Council of Kettering Rural.
