Ayers returned to England at the age of twelve, and in his early college years took up with the burgeoning musicians' scene in the Canterbury area.
Ayers has stated in interviews that the primary reason he was asked to join was that he probably had the longest hair.

Kevin Ayers is one of rock's oddest and more likable enigmas, even if often he's seemed not to operate at his highest potential.
Ayers cultivated a taste for the bohemian lifestyle early, spending much of his childhood in Majorca before he moved with his mother to Canterbury in the early '60s.
Ayers was never less than enjoyable and original, though his albums were erratic right from the start, veering from singalong ditties and pleasant, frothy folk ballads to dissonant improvisation.

 Kevin Ayers
After his family moved back to England, Ayers found escape from the far more rigid lifestyle through his association with a circle of musician/friends that included Hugh Hopper and Robert Wyatt -- both of whom had fallen under the influence of wanderer Daevid Allen.
Ayers took his leave of The Flowers in 1965, choosing instead to accompany Daevid Allen on one of his many travels.
The following year, Ayers and Allen returned to England together after having secured some funds from a wealthy American in Ibiza; Wyatt and keyboardist Mike Ratledge were brought on board, and Soft Machine was underway.

Kevin Ayers, born in 1945 in Herne Bay, Kent, was one of the people drawn into the intimate circle of well-bred Canterbury schoolboys - Robert Wyatt, Mike Ratledge, Hugh and Brian Hopper - who happened to meet the real thing, Daevid Allen, in 1961.
The son of Rowan Ayers, a BBC producer, he was partly brought up in the Far East by his stepfather, a district officer in British Malaysia.
Ayers is too self-deprecating, too elusive and knowing to ever have made it big.

Kevin Ayers belongs to that list of late 1960s musicians such as Nick Drake and Syd Barrett who retain their English accent on record.
Kevin Ayers has been musically likened to Nick Drake and Syd Barrett but he lacks the melancholy and some of the poetic genius of Nick Drake and also the manic intensity of Syd Barrett.

Kevin Ayers, in my humble opinion is one of the most overlooked of British performers who emerged as part of the Canterbury Circus from the 1960's.
Kevin Ayers' albums are idiosyncratic for two reasons, the quality of the songwriting and the diverse styles and types of music which he employs.
Like the fine wine that Ayers is reputed to enjoy, his albums are a little of an aquired taste which require a little concentration and which provide one with much cerebral enjoyment.

Kevin Ayers' third and fourth albums represent, respectively, the last will and testament of the Whole World, the almost freakishly maverick band he pieced together around Mike Oldfield, David Bedford, and Lol Coxhill, and the first flowering of the willfully pop-tinged moods into which he moved once that band shattered.
Elsewhere, "Decadence" predicts Ayers' later collaboration with Nico by dedicating at least a couple of verses to her, and packs a moody grandiosity that might well rank among Ayers' most perfectly realized compositions ever.
Fans frequently cite Ayers' earlier albums as the man at his finest and that may be true.
