  Reagan’s America: A Capital Offense
But it was a personal preoccupation for Ronald Reagan, whose antipathy toward income taxes dated back to his high-earning Hollywood days, when a top tax bracket of 91 percent in the 40s made it foolish to work beyond a certain point.
Yet the same Reagan policies that moved riches internally also accelerated the shift of world wealth, beginning with the budget deficits of the early 1980s but intensifying after the ensuing devaluation of the dollar from 1985 to 1988.

Reagan's deepening popularity with Americans and his success in office are now too overwhelming to be denied.
To be sure, many conservatives at the time angrily criticized Reagan for some of these tergiversations from purist conservative policy, though both the conservative criticism of the time and today's liberal larceny of the Reagan legacy ignore both the particular details and the general context of Reagan's actions.

Reagan was a political pragmatist, but he did articulate the same essential political philosophy and the same vision for years, even when many Republicans thought he was sort of a nut.
Reagan was popular as few others (Jackson, Roosevelt) have been, and even he couldn't push back the basic commitment our country has made that children, the disabled, and the aged shall not lack the necessities of life.

Reagan's supporters don't quite see it this way, of course, but his critics say the single most powerful thing Reagan did to create homelessness was to cut the budget for the Department of Housing and Urban Development by three-quarters, from $32.2 billion in 1981 to $7.5 billion by 1988.
The department was the main governmental supporter of subsidized housing for the poor and, combined with the administration's overhaul of tax codes to reduce incentives for private developers to create low-income homes, the nation took a hit to its stock of affordable housing from which it has yet to recover, they contend.

Blending economic analysis and historical comparisons, Phillips (Mediacracy) proposes that the legacy of Reagan's presidency includes an enormous concentration of wealth at the top, intensifying pain and inequality for the poor, a massive, mounting debt, and foreigners gobbling up large chunks of America.
His analysis linking Reaganism to America's global loss of economic power is compelling.
In this extremely readable description of the economic consequences of the "Reagan revolution" of the 1980s, Phillips relies on diverse empirical data to support the notion that there is a cyclical pattern in American politics.

George Will, in his excellent obituary column, tries to claim Reagan for the Midwest, but Dan Walters knows better: "Millions of words are being spoken and written about Ronald Reagan in the aftermath of his death Saturday, but just four capture his essence: He was a Californian."
Migration from the Midwest made up the bulk of California's population in the first part of the 20th century, and the biggest contribution of all came from Iowa and Reagan's home state of Illinois.
In that sense, Reagan really is the perfect Californian, but it's his Illinois upbringing that's the key to that.
