Kevin Rutmanis was born Kevins Roberts Visvaldis Rutmanis in the Bronx NY in 1958 to Latvian immigrants.
In late 1985, Kevin, Thor and Kevin's younger brother Sandris Rutmanis and then Jayhawks drummer (and future Cows drummer) Norm Rogers as vocalist, started the band The Cows.
Kevin was the bassist for The Cows and currently is the bassist for the supergroup Tomahawk.

Sandris Rutmanis was the very first drummer for the very greatest noise-rock band ever, The Cows.
We (Kevin and myself) decided the live shows we were attending in Mpls in the mid 80's, were like watching the stereo.
When we started, Kevin and I were about making the music sound like it was going to jump off the stage and punch you in the face.

Singer/guitarist Buzz Osbourne and bassist Kevin Rutmanis are both clad in matching tunics -- raven fl with a lurid red X spraypainted on the the chest and there are small devil-may-care slits on the sides to show off their brutal jackboots.
Rutmanis looks like a shaggy-haired corpse and his eyes are ringed with heavy fl lines.
Kevin Rutmanis then offhandedly turns around the mini glowing "Melvins" sign on his amp, and it now reads "Thank You." Clever bastards.

Kevin Rutmainis (bass) stood on the left and his mumu featured a large letter “F” while King Buzzo (guitar/vocals) stood to the right with a large “U” on his mumu.
Rutmanis is an original member of Tomahawk, a band that formed just a couple of years ago.
Rutmanis said that the first session went really well and although the two entities are not necessarily politically aligned, they get along just fine.

Years ago, I interviewed Kevin and two fellow members of the Cows for my college radio station in Chapel Hill, NC (1993, it must have been?) - I couldn't find a parking space and those damned Cows convinced me to park in a handicapped zone.
Actually, on my first tour with the Melvins, which was on Ozzfest, I had a Hitler mustache and leather Elvis hat, and I heard some guy in the audience say to his friend, "He used to wear a cowboy hat.

I've seen the Melvins three times and from my experience I've noticed two trends: 1)They keep getting louder 2)Kevin Rutmanis keeps getting wierder.

--At the end of the last song they played, they stopped suddenly, Buzz leaves the stage and Dale begins singing "Davy, Davy Crockett...." while Kevin just laughs loudly in the microphone, then they finished the song and left.

Joey Castillo the drummer, used to be in Danzig and Troy Van Leuuwen was in A Perfect Circle, Mark Lanegan was in the Screaming Trees and has had a semi - succesful solo career.
Tomahawk - again Patton heads this band, Duane denison from The Jesus Lizard plays guitar and also writes most of the music(I think), Kevin Rutmanis the drummer, also plays for Melvins and used to drum for Cows (Im not 100% sure) and John Stanier was the bassist for Helmet.
John is the drummer and Kevin the bassist in Tomahawk.

I’ve known everyone for a really long time- Duane (Denison) from Jesus Lizard, Mike (Patton) from Faith No More and Kevin (Rutmanis) from the Cows because my old band used to be on AmRep (Amphetamine Reptile).
Then he met Mike in Nashville and they started talking and blah, blah, blah and that’s how Tomahawk was born.
Duane grabbed me and then Mike grabbed Kevin and that was that.
