Residents of the Keweenaw are primarily descendants of Native Americans and early trappers and traders, along with miners and loggers who came to the area in the mid to late 1800s.
The peninsula is an obstruction to navigation on Lake Superior and to ancient mariners traveling by canoe, the original statement in the Native American (Ojibwa) language "the place where one crosses" referred to the "portage" across the peninsula.
The peninsula is situated at 57° to58° magnetic north latitude and under the right combination of space weather and atmospheric weather conditions, residents and visitors are often treated to a spectacular display.

 Keweenaw Structure
The Keweenaw peninsula is bisected by the Keweenaw fault, which is the boundary between the mid continent rift and other Precambrian terrains.
The Keweenaw is the eastern flank of a large syncline under Lake Superior, while the rock outcrops on Isle Royale represent the western flank of the syncline.
Although the Keweenaw fault is present throughout the length of the peninsula, it is poorly exposed along it's entire length.

Keweenaw Bay is one of the four original member tribes in Michigan that founded the Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan, Inc. in 1966 and remain a most vital member ever since.

Manitou Island on Lake Superior is located three miles offshore of the Keweenaw Peninsula and 16 miles east of Copper Harbor in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

The Keweenaw Peninsula is a true winter paradise, with lots and lots of powdery snow, incredible scenery, and a well developed snowmobile trail system.
During the winter of 2004-2005, Keweenaw County received 260.7 inches, or 21.73 feet, of snow and had as much as 46 inches on the ground where the official measurements are taken in Delaware.
On April 8, 2005 the official snow measurement in Keweenaw County was 5" on the ground and in Houghton County 6" on the ground.
