Keweenaw Peninsula - Michigan's Upper Peninsula
THE KEWEENAW PENINSULA, that long finger of land poking into Lake Superior, is one of the most remarkable, remote, and distinctive regions in the Middle West.
Keweenaw is Ojibwa for "place of the crossing," referring to a shortcut, a natural waterway that sliced almost entirely through the peninsula, passing between today's Hancock and Houghton.
Beginning in the 1860s the demand for Keweenaw copper was so great that Eastern owners of the most successful Keweenaw mines had to recruit workers from Europe to work in their mines.

The physical presence of the stampsand (the original crushed rock and/or the finer reprocessed waste rock) on the bottom of the waterway is the major factor affecting the benthos of the Keweenaw waterway.
Because of this impairment, Torch Lake and the Keweenaw waterway are both below their potential for supporting fish and fish reproduction.(5) Given that the larger ecosystem of Lake Superior depends on ecological niches such as the Keweenaw waterway to be productive, the impaired state of the benthos in the Torch Lake area is a concern.
Given the quantity and wide distribution of stampsands, restoring the lake to its pre-mining condition by removing the stampsands or capping parts of the waterway with a layer of sediment is neither practical nor especially desirable.
