Keystone Studios - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Keystone Studios was an early movie studio founded in Edendale, California in 1912 as the Keystone Pictures Studio by Mack Sennett with backing from Adam Kessel and Charles O. Bauman, owners of the New York Motion Picture Company.
The studio is perhaps best remembered for the era under Mack Sennett when he created the slapstick antics of the Keystone Kops and for the "Sennett Bathing Beauties." Charlie Chaplin got his start at Keystone when Sennett hired him fresh from his vaudeville career to make silent films.
Keystone faded away after his departure, and was finally dissolved after bankruptcy in 1935.

 Mack Sennett Summary
The earliest Keystone movies were crude, haphazard affairs, largely improvised from the flimsiest of scripts, but they had enormous physical gusto and hilarious sight gags, a stable of major comic acting talents, and Sennett's impeccable sense of timing and skillful editing to control the finished product.
Gradually, as the company expanded both its roster of actors, the length of its films and its prodigious output, the frenzied, freewheeling custard-pie-in-the-face-slapstick farce that was its trademark gave way to more carefully considered and controlled material, and the general chaos that prevailed was subjected to better organization.
In 1915, however, Keystone was absorbed into the new Triangle Film Corporation, which, with Sennett joining directors Griffith and Thomas Ince, could now boast a triumvirate of the American silent screen's most famous filmmaking names.

Director Leo McCarey at Hal Roach Studios recognized their potential as a team and capitalized on their contrasting, disparate physical differences (Stan: the "thin" man and Oliver: the "fat" one - each with derby hats) and classic gestures (bewildered head-scratching, tie-twiddling, eye-blinking and baby-like weeping).
Their comedy was a mixture of slapstick, sophisticated verbal comedy (often absurd and risque), zany anarchistic disrespect for the establishment, nonsensical action, and inspired buffoonery.
A Night at the Opera (1935) with its memorable scenes of the stateroom and a legal contract, and A Day at the Races (1937) were made at the height of their popularity.

 Farce and Mack Sennett
In 1912, with financial backing, he formed a new studio, Keystone, which rapidly became the industry leader in the production of slapstick comedy films, a genre that had originated in French silent films but was transformed by Sennett into a more complex art form, inventive and often even surrealistic.
As the studio prospered, Sennett's films became longer and more carefully planned, other directors were brought in, and new series were added—notably the Mack Sennett Bathing Beauties and the Kid Komedies (an early precursor of the Our Gang films).
In 1915 Keystone was merged as an autonomous unit into the new Triangle Film Corporation, which united the talents of Sennett, D.

Sennet and Keystone also pioneered the kind of madcap slapstick comedy that Chaplin, himself, would excel at.
Chaplin made his screen debut in a Keystone one-reeler, Making a Living, but it was not until his second film, Kid Auto Races, that he gave the audience a glimpse of what was to come.
The character was developed throughout Chaplin's year at Keystone, and despite being able to write and direct his own films, Chaplin needed more time to develop and explore his ideas, which was something the budget-minded Sennett would not provide.
