Abdujarik Janjalani, a veteran of the war against the Soviet Union during the Soviet war in Afghanistan, had founded Abu Sayyaf.
Khadaffy Janjalani took power of one of Abu Sayyaf's factions in an internecine struggle.

ABU Sayyaf chieftain Khadaffy Janjalani and his men are "trapped" in Maguindanao province and it will only be a "matter of time" before they are captured, a military spokesperson said Wednesday.
"Due to the assistance and support of the MILF, the group of Khadaffy Janjalani is trapped in the general area of Talayan, Maguindanao," Pascual told a news conference in Camp Aguinaldo.
Janjalani has been on the run since leaving his lair in Basilan province in 2001, when US forces held joint exercises with Filipino troops there.

Authorities are investigating intelligence reports that Khadaffy Janjalani's body was severed (cut in half) during a Nov. 19 air raid on the group's base in marshlands on southern Mindanao island.
He said, 'Janjalani is definitely dead.' The body is believed to be buried in the nearby town of Mamasapano.
