Topic: Khadja Nin

RFI Musique - - Khadja NIN
Khadja Nin was born in Burundi on 27 June 1959.
Khadja soon proved to have an exceptional singing voice and at the tender age of 7, she became one of the lead vocalists in the Bujumbara choir and performed in the local cathedral.
This song about a mother describing the world to her new-born baby (Khadja Nin has always shown herself to be deeply comitted to environmental concerns) would soar to the top of the French charts in 1996, after the TV channel TF1 selected it as their hit of the summer.

Khadja Nin, a world music sensation in Europe, is a native of the African country of Burundi.
In 1998, Khadja - for whom bitterness and denouncement seem not to exist - is so eager to live and to try out new things that she is arriving at the same step of her career.
Khadja's performance is so outstanding that the emotional power of those lyrics, sung in such a bright and strong voice on top of a dreamy kind of music, is immediately infectious.

Khadja's life is such a story that deserves to be told.
She was born in 1959 and raised in Burundi, a small African country squeezed in between two gigantic territories, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania.
In an attempt to buy itself some cultural credibility and to make a break from previous fake projects, the most powerful French TV channel, TF1, selected Khadja Nin as its summer act with her third album Sambolera (which consisted of broadcasting one of the artist's videos several times a day during the summer).

6moons.com - world music: Khadja Nin "Ya Pili"
Born in 1959 into a 10-headed family in Burundi, a small African nationality between Congo and Tanzania, Khadja Nin married early and had a child but then suffered the premature loss of her husband after her small family had moved to Europe.
During my recent trip to the German fatherland, I was lucky to spot it, instantly recognizing Khadja from her fourth, year 2000 album Ya released on Ark21 [810062] which, unlike her earlier work, was readily available in the US.
Singing in French, Swahili and Kirundi, Khadja Nin's soulful lyrics and politically astute themes join the sophisticated chorus-rich tunesmithing of Nicolas Fiszman to combine Afro-Pop and occasional Latin styles with an often Sting-reminiscent flair for catchy yet complex arrangements.

I am a big fan of African music and am always excited when I come across someone who comes highly lauded.
So I was looking forward to Khadja Nin's "Ya" album.
Well, it surely didn't strike a chord with me. This being her first US release she made the big mistake to try to appeal to Western tastes (see the Sade and Sting comparisons that have been made in other reviews), regrettably sacrificing her Burundi musical roots.
