Forces loyal to Atta, a Tajik from the Jamiat-e-Islami faction, have fought those under Uzbek warlord General Abdul Rashid Dostum, whose stronghold is in Shiberghan, west of Mazar.
Atta and Dostum fought each other during the civil war, but joined forces to oust the Taliban from the north in some of the most vicious fighting of last year's US-led campaign.
Atta, who said he was unaware of the latter charges, sought to distance himself from the Taleban deaths.
