Topic: Khalil Mardam Bey

  Ehrengast Arabische Welt

BIOGRAPHY   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
According to the family genealogy published in the 20th century, the Damascene Mardams' common patrilineal ancestor was Yahya ibn Ibrahim who lived around the turn of the 18th century and married Rabiya, the great- great-granddaughter (and presumably sole heir) of Lala Mustafa Pasha.
The circumstances would also identify 'Uthman Mardam as the politically -decisive personality ("sahib al-hall wal aqd") who, as already discussed presided over the choice of a new mufti in 1850 at the time of the Muradi family's decline/suppression and as the Ottomans of the Tanzimat turned decisively to the Maydanis for local support.
Khalil was active in the Arab Academy, an important Damascene cultural institution, and was elected its president in the 1950's.

 Guest of Honour Arab World
The late Khalil Gibran (from Lebanon) is a particular case because his mystic books (mostly translated from English) have found many readers who apparently were intrigued by his every-day-life philosophies.
The numbers for Lebanese authors are of course high because of special case of the late Khalil Gibran, and with regard to Syria it is the prolific Rafik Schami who is most prominent.
With regard to translations from French there are fairly high numbers of translations by Algerian authors (Assia Djebar and Rachid Boudjedra) and Morocco (namely Tahar Ben Jelloun) while there are few authors from Tunisia translated.
