In 1832, Annam annexed the principality of Xieng Khouang in northeastern Laos, and Siam took control of the Kingdom of Champasak in the South.
The province of Champasak is home to one of Asia's great, but least visited temples, Wat Phu.
Situated on the north east of Champasak province, the plateau covers parts of Salavan, Attapeu and Sekong provinces although there are more options for tourists visiting the plateau in Pakse.

VEUN KHAM: the village of Veun Kham is on the banks of the Mekong River and is in Lao territory.
The Angkor-period ruins of Wat Phu Champasak lie 8km south of the town.
WAT THONG (WAT NYUTTHITHAM): this turn of the century wat was used by Champasaks royal family and the bone reliquaries contain the ashes of King Nyutthitham (died 1885), Chao Ratsadanai (1946) and Chao Bounome (1975).

A 1995 Thai NGO report documents the problems with the project: "Soils where eucalyptus is planted have become sandier, and the ground is crossed by deep cracks in the dry season.
In 1990, Asia Tech wrote to the Lao government requesting permission to establish 16,000 hectares of plantations in Champasak province.
Little of the total area has been planted however, and the area that was planted is today badly maintained or completely neglected.
