Khambhat lies on an alluvial plain at the north end of the Gulf of Khambhat, which is noted for the extreme rise and fall of its tides, which can vary as much as thirty feet in the vicinity of Khambhat.
Khambhat was the capital of a princely state of British India within the Gujarat division of Bombay.
In 1780 Khambhat was taken by the army of General Goddard, was restored to the Marathas in 1783, and was afterwards ceded to the British by the Peshwa under the treaty of 1803.

The Gulf of Khambhat (formerly known as the Gulf of Cambay) is an inlet of the Arabian Sea along the west coast of India, in the state of Gujarat.
Bharuch (Broach), Surat, Khambhat, Bhavnagar, and Daman are historically important seaports.
Bharuch has been important since ancient times; Khambhat was the gulf's chief port in the Middle Ages, but after the silting of its harbor, Surat rose to prominence as the most important harbor of the Mughal empire.

This inscription mentioning him is the earliest in Khambhat and in Gujarat proper, apart from those at Bhadreshwar in Kachchh region mentioned earlier.
Though its existence as that of almost all of these inscriptions was known as long as in 1919-20, when the western Circle of the Archeological Survey of India, then located at Pune, noticed them in their report, for want of decipherment their exact and correct purport could not be made known.

VADODARA: Jains in Khambhat taluka of Anand were overjoyed when around 65 idols temple were unearthed at a construction site in the town.
Khambhat has 72 Jain temples and excavation at the site can yield more idols.
The excavation has established a connection with these historical name as most of the structures unearthed from the site are usually used in pillars (stambhs) in Jain temples," says Dinesh Za-veri, representative of Anandji-Kalyanji Trust, which looks after several Jain temples in the country.

The vast expanse of the Rann area in the north is a unique feature as it remained under sea from about 9th BC to 15th AD and is a dry salt encrusted plain at other times.

22-01-02 Overcoming long-standing interruptions, the Gujarat government has finally approved a Rs 75-crore oil and gas exploration project off the Gulf of Khambhat, sharply raising the dormant hope that the state might be on way to self-sufficiency in the sector.
The exploration, to begin in early April in a 650-sq km area mainly in the Dholka area south of Ahmedabad district, would also involve major pockets of Kalol in the Gandhinagar district.
The matter has gone to the President of India for clearance, who in turn has asked the Supreme Court for guidance.
