People in the Khammouan region of Laos prepare the rock rat by roasting it on a skewer, but the creature had not been documented in a peer-reviewed scientific journal or cookbook until Thomkins's report in Systematics and Biodiversity with a Side Order of Garlic Mashed Potatoes.
The researchers have too little information on the population size and distribution of the rock rat to currently confirm whether or not it is an endangered species.
