It should be noted that the original khandas had very similar hilts to this form and that both khanda and pattisa were originally from S. central India.
This very diffusion took the khanda to the north where as noted it did become a religious icon to the Sikhs, in the more well known form with the so called 'Hindu basket hilt'.
The actual worship of the khanda was also well known by the Rajputs, who prevailed in Rajasthan regions, and the trisula was key in symbolism to Shiva.

Mongolian Buryat Band
Vocalist Badma Khanda and her Mongolian Buryat ensemble are joined by veteran jazz trombonist Roswell Rudd for a program ranging from throat singing to jazz.
The concert featured mostly Badma Khanda’s repertoire, which Roswell calls “art folk”—modern arrangements of authentic, traditional Buryat melodies performed by musicians of the tradition who also have conservatory training and are highly musically literate.
Khanda’s songs are traditional Buryat songs, forgotten by Buryats in Russia after years of governmental suppression, but preserved by Buryats in Inner Mongolia in their original purity.

Practically speaking, the majority of people may not know or even care what the khanda means - but for that one Hindu or other non-Sikh out there who might care, I think it`s reason enough not to make generalizations on what being a true Hindu is all about.

 Review :: Khanda
Khanda is one of the first Irish groups to infuse elements of jazz improvisation and Irish traditional/Indian traditional music and create music (and ideas) rewarding to both.
Rather than promote the merits of either over the other, Khanda simply painted a wider soundscape to offer the listener an insight into what each tradition can offer the other with jazz being the fertile ground.
So it is all the more fascinating and intriguing to see Martin Nolan, Peter Brown and Ellen Cranitch adopt a far looser harmonic and rhythmic approach to the melody and employ the full toolkit of the jazz idiom to create on the spot improvisations based on ideas presented in the written tune.

This practice apparently started in the early years of the religion, and was a reflection of the Sikh's absolute rejection of the Hindu practice of caste.

Another fine moment (of many here) is Oumou Sangare's ethereal "Djoloren." Khanda sings solo for nearly a minute and half before dropping out as the band begins to enter.
Finally, Khanda returns to sing with the entire band, and the effect is breathtaking.

CHANDIGARH, Aug 5: Guru Gobind Singh Foundation chairman Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia today said the design of the Nishan-e-Khalsa to be erected at Anandpur Sahib was sacrilege and violation of the Sikh tradition, Sikh motif and Sikh symbolism.
He said sacrilege had been committed by turning the Khanda upside down with its handle touching the bowl while it should have been the other way round.
He said more, the approved design was a poor copy of the three-dimensional 66-foot high Khanda erected by the Namdharis at Malerkotla as part of the Kuka memorial.
