Young army officers, dissatisfied with political developments, assassinated Mujib and staged a military coup; they brought to power Khandakar Mushtaq Ahmed, the former minister of commerce.
When he and many of his supporters were killed, Mushtaq Ahmed resigned as president in favor of the chief justice of the Supreme Court, Abu Sadat Hohammad Sayem.
The general election was postponed indefinitely, and Mushtaq Ahmed and Zia's other possible electoral opponents were arrested.

Therefore, quite rationally the time and scope of the indemnity ordinance of President Khandakar Mushtaq Ahmed had to be extended from 15th August to 7th November with some amendments that later became a law and part of the 5th amendment of the constitution in 1979.

The slain LeT cadres were identified as Abdul Majeed alias Abu Sumama, a ‘group commander’, and Nazir Ahmed Jehangir, an activist of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM), according to Daily Excelsior.
Meanwhile, terrorists are reported to have abducted and later shot dead a civilian, identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Baba, in the Pulwama district suspecting him to be a police informer.
Nazrul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Delduar police station, said he was one of the 30 listed JMB cadres in the sub-district, evading arrest since the August 17, 2005-bomb blasts in the district.
