Kharakhorum, the 13th-century capital of the Mongol Empire, is a cultural highlight though only a few traces remain of this once great city.
One of the more interesting parts of Kharakhorum were the Mongolian women sitting around, trying to sell bits and pieces of jewelry, and family Buddhist relicts to visitors.
Erdene Zuu was supposedly constructed from ruins of Kharakhorum in 167th century where Tibetan Buddhism was proclaimed as the state religion of Mongolia.

For me Kharakhorum is a most mysterious place, it has a feeling of surrealistic strength, wisdom as well as a fierce wildness that still permeates the land that was protected by the mighty Khans and their descendants for hundreds of years.
Much of the stone blocks and columns of ancient Kharakhorum was used in the building of Erdene Zuu.
As one sits here it is easy to imagine one or any of the great Khans returning from some expedition, sweeping across the steppes in full battle gear, or some long procession of Camels, horses, donkeys and wagons laden with exotic items from a distant Turkish empire.
