Alfred Taban, managing editor of Khartoum Monitor and correspondent for the BBC and Reuters, was arrested by security forces on 12 April, by virtue of the emergency law which empowers the security forces to detain a person for 90 days without trial.
Khartoum Monitor, the only English-language daily in the country, is known for its criticism of the government's policies, especially in the South.
The daily Khartoum Monitor was suspended on 11 September for three days by the National Press Council, a body reporting directly to the president and which has the power to suspend or ban publications and to fine their publishers.

The 1997 Khartoum agreement between the Government and the South Sudan Independence Movement/Army, which broke away from the SPLA in 1991, and several smaller southern factions remains largely unimplemented, and there was significant fighting between progovernment and antigovernment elements who had signed the 1997 agreement during the year.
The Khartoum State government in past years had razed some religious buildings and thousands of squatter dwellings around Khartoum, which largely were populated by displaced southerners, including Christians and large numbers of practitioners of traditional indigenous religions; however, this practice largely had ceased during the year.
The Khartoum State government plans to upgrade conditions in some camps, requiring the movement of populations to other areas so that roads may be built or enlarged and services established.

These people were unable to grow food or earn money to feed themselves, and malnutrition and starvation became widespread.

In the summer of 2002 the most beautiful pictures made by kids from the rehabilitation centers Jireif and Bashayir are being exhibited at the British Council in Khartoum.
The drawings were made during creative workshops of War Child Netherlands and are inspired on children's experiences and dreams of the future.
