The Khasan area is most southern part of the Primorsky Administrative Region, located south from the Posiet Bay on the border corner with China and Northern Korea.
Most of Khasan territory is covered by wet lowlands, that includes a system of quite a large shallow lakes fringed by floating vegetation and surrounded by wet fields with meadows and marshes.
The Khasan area is a mixture of 'normal' Ussurii and Korean type landscape with a mosaic of lowland wet and dry hilly habitats.

Battle of Lake Khasan (July 29 — August 11, 1938) was an attempted incursion by the Japanese into the territory of the USSR.
The conflict started on July 15, 1938, when the Japanese attaché in Moscow demanded the removal of Soviet border troops from the Bezymyannaya (высота Безымянная) and Zaozernaya (высота Заозерная) Hills to the West of Lake Khasan in the south of Primorye, not far from Vladivostok, claiming this territory by the Russia-Korea border.
The first Japanese attack on July 29 was repelled, but on July 31 the Soviet troops had to retreat.

This incursion was founded in the beliefs of the Japanese side that the Soviet Union misinterpreted the demarcation of the boundary based on the Treaty of Peking between Imperial Russia and Manchu China (and subsequent supplementary agreements on demarcation), and furthermore, that the demarcation markers were tampered with.

The meeting will focus on cargo operation and commercial issues, including the transit turnover of exported goods in the first half of 2005, along with changes to a Russia-North Korea railroad agreement and a rail schedule between the Khasan (Russia) and Tumangan (North Korea) railway stations.
"Passenger turnover between the bordering Khasan and Tumangan railroad stations in the first half of 2005 was 5315 people - a 19.4% growth year on year," the spokesman said, adding that Russia's turnover of imported goods from North Korea in the same period grew 7.2%.
