This fighting caused people to move to Khayelitsha, saying they are forced to move to Khayelitsha because of the violence and moving to Khayelitsha was not their intention It was exactly what the government wanted them to do.
In 1990 the population of Khayelitsha was estimated at 450,000 and unemployed at 80 per cent.

Nurse Mpumie Mantananga is responsible for managing Khayelitsha's Ubuntu clinic in the heart of the township.
Khayelitsha is MSF's first HIV/AIDS treatment programme to be handed over to the authorities and the end result has implications for thousands receiving care elsewhere on the continent.

It is the first operatic film to be made in South Africa's Xhosa language, it is the first African film to win the coveted Golden Bear for best picture at the Berlin Film festival and it is the first mainstream film to use actors almost exclusively from the townships.
After a standing ovation at the end of the film, people at the premiere I spoke to were gushing about what it had achieved both artistically and socially.

The CAPS survey has of course a good proportion of households living in these informal settlements, and since it is the gola of the survey to follow households over a couple of years, effort is made to find out where housholds have moved etc.
On Monday, I could accompany some people from the CAPS project to Khayelitsha, a township in the southeast of the metropolitan area.
It is pretty intense to see the situation in some parts of the townships, and I could take some pictures (David Lam made some with me also, but it is an open question how often I will have to remind him of that before I get those images...).

The rate for Khayelitsha is derived from a figure of 623 rapes in the area which has a population of about 500 000.
The figures are contained in the latest crime statics report of the SA Police Services which was released 10 days ago.
