"Khe Sanh", sung by the band's lead singer, Jimmy Barnes, was released as a 45 rpm single in May 1978.

Khe Sanh is the district capital of Hướng Hoá District, Quảng Trị Province, Vietnam, located 63 km west of Đông Hà.
Khe Sanh Combat Base was a U.S. Marine outpost in South Vietnam 16°39′16″N, 106°43′51″E (MGRS 48QXD850418) used during the Vietnam War.
On July 5, 1968, Khe Sanh was abandoned, the U.S. Army citing the vulnerability of the base to enemy artillery.

The importance of Khe Sanh and its outposts to the United States was the defenders’ role in interdicting and monitoring movement through the Rao Quang River Valley and Route 9, into Quang Tri Province.
Khe Sanh veterans returning there today would recognize the calm atmosphere provided by Dong Tri Mountain northeast of the plateau; and the ghosts of Khe Sanh would quietly whisper the memories which some will never forget.

All hands knew that both Khe Sanh and the Da Nang brig were infinitely safer than the hill, and there were even two or three who actively sought courts-martial.
A radio conference with a physician down at Khe Sanh established that his wound was not life-threatening and therefore did not justify an emergency medical evacuation with the consequent risk to the helicopter.

On 6 March 1968, SSgt William F. Anselmo and SSgt Noel L. Rios were assigned the duty of traveling from their squadron at DaNang to Khe Sanh Airfield to repair a disabled aircraft.
He initiated his final approach to Khe Sanh’s airfield, but was forced to abort the landing because of a South Vietnamese Air Force (VNAF) light aircraft that obstructed the runway.
Due to the tactical situation in and around Khe Sanh, ground search parties first reached the aircraft’s wreckage on 26 April 1968 to begin the grizzly task of recovering remains.

General Westmoreland ordered that Khe Sanh receive maximum support from Boeing B-52 Stratofortress heavy bombers and ordered the 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division to prepare to deploy to I Corps Tactical Zone on 24-hour notice.
From another perspective, Colonel Kent O. Steen, an arrillery officer at Khe Sanh, commented, "we did homemade bunkers not because we wanted to or didn't know better, but that there weren't enough airlift and construction resources in Vietnam to provide the materials we need once the threat was understood." During the siege of Khe Sanh in 1968, volunteers from the 8th APS were sent TDY to augment 15th APS' airlift support of Khe Sanh.
At least one of these 8th Aerialporters wound up at Khe Sanh with the 15th APS mobility team and lived with the US Marines in the trenches and bunkers of the besieged camp.
In the spring of 1970, an 8th APS team member at Song Be jumped into a foxhole during a particularly devasting VC attack and manned an M-60 machine gun for hours, warping the barrel by the heat of continued long bursts at the attacking VC.
