Khitomer is a Class M planet in the Klingon Empire, located in the Beta Quadrant near the borders to the Federation and the Romulan Star Empire.
Khitomer played a vital role in the development of the Klingon-Federation alliance, being the site of the Khitomer Conference and the victim of a Romulan sneak attack on this planet's colony, which, in turn, emphasized the importance of the Klingon-Federation friendship.
In 2346, on stardate 23859.7, the Klingon colony on Khitomer fell victim to a Romulan attack that became known as the Khitomer Massacre.
