Khleangs - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Khleangs are two buildings of unknown purpose on the east side of the Royal Square in Angkor Thom, Cambodia.
They have given their name to the Khleang style, which is characterised by relatively simple lintels with a central kala.
South Khleang is an unfinished building dating from the reign of Suryavarman I.

Ta Keo was build by Jayavarman V (968-1001 AD), who is accredited for initiating the Khleangs, Phimanakas, and the Gates of the Royal Palace of Angkor Thom.
The Svāyambhuva linga excludes that the temple dates to the Jayavarman VII and Baphoun style and indicates that it must at least belong to the same era as the nearby Ta Muan Thom.
Due to the resemblance of the Khleang style Prasat Ta Keo and its incomplete condition makes the author suggest late 10th century - beginning af 11th century.

North Khleang & South Khleang, ancient Angkor ruins | AsiaExplorers   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
South Khleang is an unfinished building dating from the reign of Suryavarman I. It was probably added to enhance the symmetry although in actual fact it is not fully identical to its northern cousin, being slightly narrower.
I had the opportunity of exploring the two Khleang buildings one dry afternoon in February.
It is the beginning of the dry season, and the ruins are carpeted by falling leaves, giving the place an impression of autumn.

Cambodia Tales - Angkor at leisure
We stopped at the group of food stalls near the Bayon for a snack and an hour spent wandering on my own around the rarely-visited temples of Preah Pithu, Prasat Suor Prat and the Khleangs before moving on to spend the rest of the afternoon at Angkor Wat.
An elephant was wallowing in one of the pools of water immediately in front of the five sanctuaries of the Preah Pithu group.
Next door was the North Khleang, sat behind three of the dozen Suor Prat towers, which dominate the eastern side of the royal plaza.

An inscription of 1022-25 from Lopburi confirms Suryavarman I's control.
The style associated with his reign is that of the Khleangs, marked by the appearance of complete surrounding galleries with vaulted roofs. In Thailand, the temples of Muang Tam and Preah Vihear date partly from this time.
It was another king to take the title "protégé of The sun", Suryavarman II, who pushed the Empire to its furthest limits.

This former residence of kings is memorable for its two large bathing ponds.
Northern and Southern Khleang, beginning 11 th century, are called “The Storerooms”, but the title hardly does them justice.
There are many beautiful carvings and are believed to have been built to receive foreign dignitaries.

 Cambodia Tales - overview99
I rounded off the day with a return visit to the refurbished Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and a leisurely wander through the busy aisles of the Russian market.
The rest of the day was spent at the Bayon with the Japanese government team for Safeguarding Angkor (JSA), Ta Prohm, Preah Khan, Prasat Prei, Banteay Prei, Krol Ko, Neak Pean and sunset at Phnom Bakheng.
The next day was similar with another Angkor Wat sunrise and then onto Prasat Kravan, Bat Chum, Banteay Kdei, Srah Srang, Ta Prohm, Ta Nei, Thommanon, Chau Say Tevoda, Preah Pithu and the North and South Khleangs.

These sit on either side of the road leading to the Victory Gate (opposite the Elephant Terrace) and are made of laterite and largely undecorated.
The JSA team had cordoned off, erected scaffolding and were restoring two of them, although access was still permitted to the galleries and false windows of the North and South Khleangs that lay immediately behind them.
By this time, I was visibly flagging with temple fatigue.

NOTE: Over a century later, Jayavarman VII (1181-1220) built his state temple in the same location, and so Angkor Thom has, uniquely, two focal centers rather than one: its geometric center is the Bayon, a warren of galleries and towers so magnificent that it was re-used by many kings for years to come.
The Northern and Southern Khleangs, a series of twelve towers or 'libraries' is still pondered among the experts.
