Khmelnytskyi Oblast ( Хмельницька область, Khmel’nyts’ka oblast’ or Хмельниччина, Khmel'nychchyna in Ukrainian) is an oblast (province) of western Ukraine.
The ancient city of Kamianets' (now a raion center within the oblast') has long been the capital of Podillya and one of the most important trade centers of Eastern Europe.
The oblast' is a historical crossroad of the railway and highway routes connecting Central Europe to Black Sea coast and Russia (with city of Shepetivka being the most important railway junction).

The name of each oblast is a relative adjective, formed by adding a feminine suffix to the name of respective center city.
An oblast center in Ukraine is usually the largest and most developed city in given province.

The Khmelnytskyi Oblast director of the National Archives, Petro Slobodianiuk, blamed the fired on "negligence and carelessness by individuals and the general unsafe state of the archives and the area in the possession of the UOC-MP."
She told The Weekly that electricity had long ago stopped working on the third floor, where the archives were found, so the fire could not have started there.
She said that no extensive updating of preservation systems and fire extinguishing systems had been planned because a long-planned transfer of the collection to the oblast archives was being awaited.

During the German occupation, this military region coincided with the Ternopil province ( oblast) that had existed under Soviet administration, except that it excluded the Volyn districts ( raiony) of the former Kremianets county ( povit) and included the former Rohatyn county.
As a result of reorganization in the spring of 1945, the underground Ternopil province was renamed the Podillia krai ; the territory of that krai coincided with that of the UPA's 3d Military Region.
As we stated earlier, "Podillia" was the code name of the OUN and underground administration in this krai, ( oblast) which was organized during the spring of 1945 on the territory of the previous underground Ternopil province.
