Several European institutions have successfully pioneered the principle of stereoscopic observation of gamma-ray induced air showers as a technique to do very high energy astronomy with the HEGRA instrument on the island of La Palma.
Following the success of HEGRA, a next generation instrument, called HESS (High Energy Stereoscopic System), is currently under construction in the Khomas Highland of Namibia.
Both these sites were also in contest for the SALT telescope and although Sutherland was chosen for this, the Gamsberg was identified as one of the best sites in the world.
