Khorassan is the easternmost province of northern Iran and its name means, "Where the Sun rises".
Most of Khorassan province is mountainous; however, there are many fertile valleys and the province produces large quantities of fruit, nuts, sugar beet and cotton.
Khorassan is the largest Iranian province and has a surface area of some 300,000 square kilometres (115,830 square miles), but over half its population is centred around Mashhad and Neishabur.

Hossein Zare-Sefat, the security chief of the northeastern Khorassan province, told state television that although the Iranian borders with Afghanistan will be closed in order to prevent another influx of Afghan refugees, buffer zones will nevertheless be established at relevant border points with cooperation of the UNHCR.
The UNHCR in Mashad, capital of Khorassan province which has the longest border with Afghanistan, could not definitely confirm the buffer zones but said that such a plan - like many other plans - is under consideration.

I know there are purists out there who believe EVERY weaving from Khorassan with this structure to be Arab Baluch, but I dispute this.
The border is drawn in such a manner as to suggest the leaves radiating outwards from the white flowers as large "S" forms, an unusally archaic feature.
