Khorog is located along the Panj River near the border with Afghanistan.
Until the late 19th century, Khorog was in an area disputed between the Emir of Bukhara, Shah of Afghanistan, Russia and Britain.
Khorog is situated along the Pamir Highway, which connects it to the capital city of Dushanbe toward the west, and to the Republic of Kyrgyzstan to the east and north.

In Khorog, average temperature is 23.70 C in August and -6.3° C in January; in Bulunkul, a small village near Lake Yashilkul, average monthly temperature varies between 11.20 C in July and -25.5° C in January.
The whole region is rather dry (annual precipitation in Khorog 235 mm, in Bulunkul only 86 mm), with the major part of the precipitation falling as snow in the period between November and April.

In Khorog I had not been able to find anything useful for the purpose of putting the vases in the ground which is very hard and very stony.

As I drove into Khorog from the airport the streets where lined with children holding flowers and smiling and waving at the passing cars, waiting for the army trucks.
In spring I had spent a week in Khorog, the school we choose was located in the center and was in great need of repair, but a new director had taken over the previous year and his energy was creating improvements.
In Khorog there are several international organizations, most dominantly the Aga Khan Foundation which works in all spheres of social life and had a larger presence than the Tajik government itself.

This way our piece of paper follows quite exactly the description of the GBAO permit given at http://www.traveltajikistan.com/visas/gbao.html except that it was not written in our passport, but on a separate piece of paper, what got us into minor trouble later.
In Khorog we wanted to register again with OVIR/ ОВИР as it is recommended on the aforementioned website, but again OVIR was closed and we had no time to go there again next morning, so we decided to rely on our little piece of paper and go straight to Dushanbe skipping OVIR.
On the way from Khorog to Dushanbe there seem to be more checkpoints (Tadjik and Russian) than on the Pamir Highway.

All supplies to Khorog come in via this route at the moment or via Russia through Osh, in Kyrgystan, via a route leading northeast and then back to the northwest out of Khorog.
Coming back from Khorog, we hit the river crossing again and were blocked by lack of transport vehicles and high water.

I finally registered in Khorog at a cost of $15 (payable in somoni) and 15 somoni, for which you get two stamps in your passport, registration and GBAO permit.

I followed the uniform in to the building and was escorted to a room where the gentleman proceeded to copy my passport details onto a scrap of paper, already full of all sorts of random scribblings.
