The town of Khost is the capital of Khost Province, a mountainous region near Afghanistan's border with Pakistan.

In the southern city of Khost, 212 families have been ordered out of what they insist are their homes by the local government.
According to Abdul Hakim Taniwal, the governor of Khost province, the families that he ordered to be removed had lost their rights to the land when they abandoned it decades ago.
To complicate matters further, Khost’s deputy mayor Haji Sakhi said that fighting in 2002 between governor Taniwal and Pacha Khan Zadran, a local warlord who was governor of Khost before him, caused a fire that burned down city buildings containing land deeds and public files.

He said however that those caught were only involved in the mining for which they were being paid minimal sums of money and that the real smugglers were yet to be identified and caught.

KHOST (AFP) - A suspected Pakistani suicide bomber who planned to target foreign troops and senior Afghan officials has been arrested in the southeastern Khost province of Afghanistan, officials said Sunday.
The bomber was arrested in Zirai Tarkha area, two kilometers (1.2 miles) west of Khost city, the capital of Khost province some 140 kilometers (87 miles) southeast of capital Kabul.
“We are looking for another four (suspected) bombers who are in Khost province and they might have some Afghan allies as well who have guided them in the province,” he said.
