In the beginning of May the destructive energy characterizing the first pogrom period began to ebb.
In its endeavors to make up for the lack of substantial evidence, the commission, personified by Khovanski, put itself in communication with the governors of the Pale, directing them to obtain information concerning all local ritual murder cases in past years.

Extreme Real Algebraic Geometry   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Fewnomial Theory is a beautiful invention of Askold Khovanski and Konstantin Sevastyanov (after 1979) that greatly extends the classical Descartes' Rule of Signs (from 1637).
In particular, Khovanski's theory shows that systems of real polynomial equations with a fixed number of monomial terms have an absolute bound --- completely independent of the degrees of the underlying polynomials --- on the number of real isolated roots they can have.
More recently, an arithmetic analogue was found by Rojas (following earlier seminal work of Denef, van den Dries, Lipshitz, and Lenstra), and quantitative improvements to real fewnomial theory continue to blossom.

 Battle of Gorodetschna -- 1812
The Russian forces consisted of the third army of General of the Cavalry Tormasov, less the detached groups of Czaplitz, Malissino and Prince Khovanski.
At the appearance of the numerically superior forces of the Austrian Corps of Schwarzenberg and the 7th Corps of Reynier, Tormasov concentrated the corps of Markov and Kamenski and Lambert's Group at Gorodetschna, a total of 18,000 men.
Napoleon was impressed enough with Schwarzenberg's handling of the battle that, at his request, Schwarzenberg was promoted to Field Marshal by Emperor Francis.

Since Khovanski’s paper in 1980, on the uniform finiteness of number of connected components for semi-Pfaffian sets, there has been intensive activity on related algorithmic and definability issues.
Several years ago Karpinski and Macintyre had shown the power of a combination of Khovanski’s methods and model theory by getting close to the optimal bounds for the VC-dimension of sigmoidal neural networks.
More generally they had begun to link Vapnik’s more recent work to o-mimimality, and related model-theoretic notions, with a view to randomized algorithms in certain real and p-adic geometrical situations.

Counting Isolated Roots Of Trinomial Systems In The Plane And Beyond (ResearchIndex)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Abstract: We prove that any pair of bivariate trinomials has at most 5 isolated roots in the positive quadrant.
The best previous upper bounds independent of the polynomial degrees counted only non-degenerate roots and even then gave much larger bounds, e.g., 248832 via a famous general result of Khovanski.
Our bound is sharp, allows real exponents, and extends to certain systems of n-variate fewnomials, giving improvements over earlier bounds by a factor exponential in the number of monomials.

for the case of a single univariate polynomial, provides a sharper analogue of an earlier result of Khovanski over the real numbers, and greatly simplifies earlier work of Denef, Lipshitz, and van den Dries which involved rigid analytic geometry and model theory.
We thus obtain the foundations for an arithmetic analogue of Khovanski's theory of fewnomials.
