KHOWST PROVINCE, Afganistan (Nov. 02, 2004) -- Lieutenant Colonel Julian Alford, commander of 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, sat conversing in the house of an Afghan doctor in the Khowjah Kalay village when a loud explosion interrupted their conversation.
A militant fired a 107mm rocket at the battalion commander while he conducted an operation with Weapons Company in the mountains between the provinces of Khowst and Gardez.
In less than a month, the battalion has conducted numerous operations throughout Khowst Province and an equal number of operations in the Nangarhar and Paktia Provinces.

He said the Americans were also looking for the killer of Sgt. 1st Class Nathan Chapman, a Green Beret killed Jan. 4 by small-arms fire during an ambush near Khowst, a few miles from the Pakistani border.
Bomb blasts shook Khowst after nightfall, suggesting the U.S. again struck in the Zawar Kili region, a nearby area that is riddled with tunnels and caves.

A convoy of soldiers from Forward Operating Base Solerno, rolled into Khowst in early February in a surprise visit to deliver 5,340 humanitarian daily rations as well as 16 boxes of medical supplies, warm clothes and shoes to the Civilian Hospital of Khowst.
It is staffed by seven doctors, two of them female, and all of whom work with the barest of equipment and are rarely paid for their services, said Col. John Wassner, commander of the 909th FST.
The clothing and shoes were donated by family members of the 909th FST from Fort Sheridan, Ill., and the food and medical supplies, including two boxes of antibiotics, were coordinated through the civil affairs team, who are involved in every humanitarian mission.

The coalition forces in Khowst were fired upon by machine guns, rocket -propelled grenades and mortars, Hilferty said.
The coalition troops returned fire and are "continuing to develop the situation," he said.
